Victorian 3rd Dragoon Guards Heavy Cavalry Presentation Sword etched with foliate scrolls, crowned VR cypher, 3rd DG, and presentation inscription which reads – Presented to Sjt Major Short 4th L.D by the officers and men of the 3DG in appreciation of assistance given at Balaclava 2nd Feb 1856 Regulation steel honeysuckle hilt with wire bound fish skin grip, in its steel scabbard with two suspension rings, maker marked Buckmaster London Notes: Frederick Short was born in Windsor and enlisted in the 3rd Light Dragoons in December 1843 aged 18 years. In the following year he transferred to the 4th Light Dragoons. He attained Sergeant in July 1854 and served with distinction in the Crimean war and in particular in the famous charge of the Light Brigade, when he dispatched several enemy artillery drivers with his sword.
