U.S Smith’s Patent Cavalry Carbine 1857

These .50 percussion carbines are the 1857 Smith’s patent break barrel, capping breech loader manufactured by Mass Arms Co, Chicopee Falls and retailed by Poultney and Trimble, Baltimore, USA. The brass barrel release lever is within the trigger guard. Once the hammeris cocked, the button is activated upwards and the barrel’ breaks’ to open the chamber. The 21.6” barrel is octagonal at the breech and round at the muzzle. Marked with inspector’s mark G.W.S. at the breech, with a single barrel band retaining the fore-stock, twin folding leaf sights and blade fore-sight. The breech has a saddle ring on the LHS along with the Makers, Retailer’s and Patent details. There is a two piece black walnut stock with a cartouche on the LHS of the butt. The serial No 21403 ( C 1863) is marked on the underside of the breech block. LOA 995mm.
