Norfolk Regiment Of Militia Presentation Officers Sword, 81.5cm blade by Thurkle. The super blade finely etched with scrolling foliage, crowned VR cypher, a laurel spray, owner’s crest and initials and the inscription PRESENTED TO W.M.R. HAGGARD OF WEST BRADENHAM HALL IN THE COUNTY OF NORFOLK ESQR BY HIS FELLOW PARISHIONERS AS A MARK OF ESTEEM AND AFFECTION ON THE OCCASION OF HIS JOINING THE EAST NORFOLK REGT OF MILITIA WHEN EMBODIED DECR. 27TH 1854 IN CONSEQUENCE OF THE WAR WITH RUSSIA FOR PERMAMENT AND ACTIVE SERVICE. The gilt brass Gothic hilt incorporating a crowned VR cypher and chased over all with oak leaves and scrolling foliage, wire bound fish skin grip, contained in its steel scabbard. Note that the inscription mentions the sword was presented in consequence of the war with Russia, given that Haggard was born in St Petersburg in Russia.
