Life Guards 1796 Full Dress Sword, with original leather scabbard and mounts. A lovely, big sword, exceptional quality, a bit different to the usual ones you see. The end of the pommel is engraved a ducal coronet and monogram DS which may refer to the Duke of Devonshire – although no Dukes were in Household regiments a George Henry Cavendish was with the 1st Life Guards and gaining a promotion and marriage during it, so possibly had been a gift to him. The Devonshire surname is Cavendish, this officer’s grandfather was a Duke of Devonshire, also his Uncle and then cousin – the latter around the right period has virtually identical monogram and coronet on stationery ?? In super condition age wear to the leather on the scabbard overall length 40 inches the blade 33 inches
