French 18th Century Cannon Systeme Valliere

A French 18th Century Cannon of this style is detailed in The Armouries of The Tower of London The Ordnance plate 140 page 119 but larger and is noted as belonging to the series known as the systeme Valliere. It is embellished in low relief at the muzzle with a band of acanthus foliage plus scroll and motto below ULTIMA RATIO REGUM the last argument of kings. Below that shield of arms with two cannon below. This is followed by the royal coat of arms of France surmounted by the sun with motto NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR. The gun is mounted on a later truck carriage of super quality overall length 23 inches bore 1 inch and weight 12.65 KG
