English 17th century Mortuary Sword with maker marked basket hilt, the iron hilt of fine quality comprising solid guard merging with a knuckle-guard flanked by two vertical side-bars each struck with makers marks please see images and four diagonal bars, with a further diagonal bar to the rear of each vertical side-bar, globular pommel with button. The straight blade with two fullers and struck with Clemens Willems Me Fecit Solingen to both sides. Overall length 99cm the blade 81cm. Mortuary sword were used after 1625 by cavalry during the English Civil War with a straight blade. The hilts were often of very intricate sculpting and design and after the execution of King Charles, basket-hilted swords were made which depicted the face or death mask of the martyred king on the hilt as this example does.
