Heavy Cavalry officer’s sword by Wilkinson Sword with patent tang belonging to Algernon Joseph Rutherford Lamb DSO machine gun officer’s: Algernon Joseph Rutherford Lamb was born on 4 Oct 1891, the son of William Rutherford Lamb JP and Alice Mitford of Goldsborough Hall, near Knaresborough, Yorkshire. This property was owned by the Lacelles family who also owned Harewood House. Algernon joined the Queen’s Bays in 1911 while they were at Aldershot. As a lieutenant he went with them to France in 1914 and distinguished himself greatly at the battle of Nery on 1 Sep. He was the machine-gun officer and brought two guns to bear on the German artillery 800 yards away. The sword with regulation hilt patent tang and grip, note grip wire missing, slightly curved blade engraved with King’s crown and regimental badge plus Wilkinson Sword solid patent tang and proof plug to reverse.
