Excellent sword in super condition hilt and scabbard silver plated. The hilt regulation pattern but with regimental badge, Victorian crown and slung bugle below and complete with officer’s knot, chequered back strap and stepped pommel. The slightly curved blade etched with VR and Royal Coat of Arms, regimental badge trophies of arms plus Earl or Derby’s own coat of arms all surrounded by floral decoration. Maker marked Hawes and Co London with proof plug to reverse. It is complete with matching silver-plated scabbard which is engraved with family crest and initials. Notes: Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby, KG PC FRS 21 July and Hon Colonel of the 1st Lancashire Rifle Volunteers. 1826 – 21 April 1893 known as Lord Stanley from 1851 to 1869 was a British statesman. He served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs twice, from 1866 to 1868 and from 1874 to 1878, and also twice as Colonial Secretary in 1858 and from 1882 to 1885.
