British Staff Officers Sword by Wilkinson number 13078 purchased by Capt Buchanan July 1864 – Lieutenant-General Henry James Buchanan CB He was commissioned as an ensign in the 47th Regiment of Foot on 14 June 1850. He fought at the Battle of Alma in September 1854 and the Battle of Inkerman in November 1854 as well as the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. He also served with the Jowaki expedition of 1877–1878. He went on to be Commander of the 3rd Brigade at Aldershot in January 1887 and General Officer Commanding Eastern District in January 1889. The sword hilt shows age wear to the grip and has the Victorian crown with crossed sword and baton in the cartouche in the guard. The blade in good condition with nice early engraving which inclused V R and crown the reverse again with crossed sword and baton, maker marked Henry Wilkinson London and proof plug. The scabbard shows age wear and dents and is complete with two loose rings.
