Silver makers mark G.R.C, hallmarks for 1861 with straight blade etched with panels of scrollwork and oak foliage over much of its length on both sides, involving the cypher SRV for Staffordshire Rifle Volunteeers on one side and the recipients crest a presentation inscription PRESENTED TO JOHN HARRISON ESQ CAPTAIN OF THE 22nd STAFFORDSHIRE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS BY THE MEMBERS OF HIS COMPANY 1862 and the regimental device on the other, silver hilt cast in relief, the guard decorated with an elaborate pierced design of flowers and foliage enclosing the recipients crest on an escutcheon supported by triumphant cherubs and with the presentation inscription repeated around the edge original pattern tang hilt with grip of chequered horn bound with silver wire and in its original silver-plated scabbard 82.6cm blade
